FAQs
Good questions, straight answers.
Everything people ask about selling, buying and paying on Motor Match. Cannot find yours? Ask us.
Selling
Who sells the car, Motor Match or me?
You do. Every car on Motor Match is sold privately by its owner. Motor Match provides the platform, the presentation and the supporting services. The sale agreement is made directly between you and the buyer, and Motor Match is not a party to it.
Does my car stay with me?
Yes. Your car stays at your place. A local photographer comes to you, and viewings happen at a time and place you set in your availability.
What does it cost to list?
There is a listing fee once your application is approved, and a platform success fee if your car sells through Motor Match. The current amounts, what they include and what they do not include are on the fees page. Pricing is subject to change before launch.
Do I get to approve the listing?
Always. We prepare a description from the facts you give us and a photographer shoots the car, but nothing goes live until you approve the complete listing: photos, description, specs and price. Any material change later comes back to you for approval.
Can I also list my car on Trade Me?
Yes. We give you a listing pack with your photos and approved description, plus your Motor Match enquiry number and email. You list it from your own Trade Me account. We never ask for your Trade Me password.
Who negotiates the price?
You and the buyer. Offers are always the buyer's own and replies are always yours. Our team can pass on a message or prepare a document from your written instruction, but never accepts, changes or negotiates an offer for you.
I sell cars in trade. Can I use Motor Match?
Please tell us when you apply. If you are in trade, you keep all of your own obligations as a seller, including any registration, Consumer Information Notice and consumer guarantee duties.
Buying
Who am I buying from?
The owner of the car. Each listing is a private sale by the owner, presented by Motor Match. Your agreement is directly with the seller.
Why do I need an ID check before a viewing?
Viewings usually happen at the owner's home. A quick identity check through our verification provider tells the owner who is coming. The owner only sees that your ID has been verified, never your ID images.
Can I get finance or sell my current car?
You can ask for an introduction to an independent finance partner or a partner wholesaler from the car page or your portal. The partner deals with you directly under its own terms. Motor Match does not give financial advice.
Can I have the car inspected?
Yes. You can make your offer conditional on an inspection by an inspector you choose, and the condition is tracked in your portal with its deadline.
Do my consumer rights still apply?
Nothing in Motor Match's terms limits any rights you have under New Zealand consumer law. Which laws apply to a car depends on who the seller is. Private sales and sales by traders are treated differently, so ask the seller if you are unsure, and seek advice if you need it.
Payments and escrow
Who holds my money when I buy?
iPromise, an independent New Zealand escrow provider. You pay the agreed price to iPromise, and it is released to the seller under the agreed terms after handover. Motor Match never receives or holds the purchase price.
When is the money released to the seller?
Only after the agreed conditions and the handover checklist are complete and the required confirmations are recorded, under iPromise's own release process. Release never happens just because time has passed.
What if there is a problem at handover?
Do not sign a clean receipt if the car is not as agreed. Record the problem in your portal and it follows the agreed dispute route with the escrow provider. Nobody is forced to sign.
How are Motor Match fees paid?
Motor Match fees are paid separately by card through our payment provider. They are never mixed with the purchase money held in escrow. Partner charges, such as finance, shipping or inspection fees, are shown separately.
Safety
Does an ID check mean a buyer is genuine?
It confirms the person is who they say they are. It does not confirm their intentions, their finances or that they will buy. Use your judgement and never hand over keys or documents before funds are confirmed in escrow.
Is the car checked by Motor Match?
We run a basic registration lookup and the checks shown on the listing, with their source and date. These are not a full history, mechanical or title check. Buyers should arrange an independent inspection and their own checks.
Someone asked me to pay outside Motor Match. What should I do?
Do not pay. Motor Match will only ever direct purchase money to iPromise, through a link in your portal. If anything looks wrong, contact us before you act.
Account and privacy
Do I need a password?
No. You sign in with a secure link sent to your email. For some steps, such as signing an agreement, we also send a one-time code to your verified phone.
Who sees my personal details?
Your home address, phone number and documents are never shown publicly. We share details with partners only for the service you ask for, or with your consent. The privacy policy explains this in full.
Can I see or correct the information you hold about me?
Yes. Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for access to your personal information and ask us to correct it. Contact our privacy officer through the contact page.
Can I stop marketing emails?
Yes. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can change your alerts and preferences in your account at any time. Messages about a deal you are part of will still be sent.
